Philip Bonczyk has an unconventional background for a queer tango teacher.
He has been an English teacher, run his own catering business, spent years living and working in a Buddhist retreat and has, for the last 18 years, been a funeral celebrant. He speaks fluent Polish, some Spanish, French and German, and is now learning Japanese. He has just joined a brass band.
But for 20 years, alongside all this, he has danced tango!
Philip began teaching tango about 15 years ago, and went to his first queer tango event in Hamburg in 2009. Ever since then, he has been a familiar figure on the international queer tango circuit, much in demand - according to Ray Batchelor - as an accomplished, subtle, and rather wonderful dance partner.
Philip lives in Sussex. For the last 12 years or so, he has run tango classes in and around Lewes. Since restarting after Covid, he has run these as totally dual-role, with everyone learning both to lead and to follow.
